Project Learning Tree (PLT) uses the forest as a "window" into natural and built environments, helping people gain an awareness and knowledge of the world around them, as well as their place within it. Since its inception in 1976 PLT has been recognized as one of the premier environmental education programs in the world. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT provides students with opportunities to investigate environmental issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible decisions. PLT helps students learn how to think, not what to think, about the environment.
PLT is a program of the American Forest Foundation in Washington, D.C. Within Connecticut, PLT is co-coordinated by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and CFPA. CFPA is the sole fiscal agent of PLT Connecticut, and as such, is responsible for the financial sustainability of the entire program.
PLT's GreenSchools! program inspires students to take personal responsibility for improving the environment at their school, at home, and in their community. Students, teachers, and school staff members receive tools, training, and resources for student-led Green Teams to create healthier schools - and to save schools' money! PLT GreenSchools! helps improve students' academic performance, develops students' critical thinking skills, and grows student leaders.
eesmarts and CFPA have partnered to bring PLT GreenSchools! Investigations on Recycling, Water, and Energy to educators in Connecticut. These PLT GreenSchools! Investigations workshops are offered during the eesmarts Summer Institute and supplemented with related eesmarts classroom inquiries. The PLT workshop registration fee is sponsored by eesmarts for these workshops.
